Router

  • A router is a device that forwards data packets along networks.
  • A router is connected to atleast two networks, commonly two LANs (Local Area Networks) or WANs (Wide Area Networks consists of two or more LANs).
  • Otherwise  router is connected to two LANs and its ISPs (Internet Service Providers).
  • Routers are located at gateways, is the place where two or more networks connected.

Wireless Router:

  • A wireless router is a device that performs the functions of a router and also includes the functions of wireless access point.
Applications:
  • Routers may provide connectivity between enterprise and network.
  • Large routers interconnect various ISPs used in large enterprise networks.
  • Small routers are used for internet connectivity in home and office networks.
History:
  • Setup in 1972 as an informal group to consider the technical issues involved in connecting different networks.
