Modem

  • A modem (modulator - de modulator) is a network hardware device that modulates one or more carrier wave signals to encode digital information for transmission and demodulates signals to decode the transmission information.
  • The goal of modem is to produce the original digital from modulated signals.
  • A common type modem is one that turns the digital data of a computer into modulated electrical signal for transmission and demodulated by another modem at the receiver side to recover the digital data.
  • A DSL modem is a device that can be used to connect the computer to internet via DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) connection.
  • The bandwidth of DSL can be from 128 kbps to 3-7Mbps or higher.
  • Types of DSL modem connections are ADSL and SDSL.

ADSL:

  • Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line offers internet connection with different upload and download bandwidth.

SDSL:

  • Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line has same upload and download bandwidths.

Dailup Modem:

  • Dialup modem is used for establishing dailup internet connection from computer or laptop by using telephone line.
  • It is not famous because only 56 kbps bandwidth.

Cable Modem:

  • Cable modem is used for high speed cable internet connection.
