- Code 39 has 43 characters consisting of uppercase letters (A-Z), numeric (0-9) and special characters like (-, ., $, /, +, %, space).
- Additional special character ' * ' is used as start and stop character.
- Each character is composed of elements five bars and four spaces. In these nine elements three are wide 1s and 6 elements are narrow 0s.
- The width the narrow and wide is not difficult, it may be between 1:2 and 1:3.
- Very small goods can be labeled with code 39 based barcode. Code 39 is still used by some postal services.
Encoding:
- The character * is the start and stop symbol for code 39.
- The asymmetry of the symbol allows the reader to determine the direction of the barcode being scanned.
- In the Code 39 based barcode double-wide bar represented as 11, single wide bar is 0 and narrow bar is 1.
- In the Code 39 Barcode the total sum of the code with out start / stop symbol and divide by 43 then the remainder is called as check sum.
