Aliasing and Anti-Aliasing

Aliasing:

  • Appearing stair case type of line called jaggies on the computer screen is called the aliasing.
  • It is due to the low resolution of the output devices like monitor and printer.

Anti-aliasing:

  • Anti-aliasing is a software technique for diminishing the jaggies.
  • Jaggies can be decreased by adding the grey shades or color to the affected area.

Types of anti-aliasing techniques:

1.Anti-aliasing filter:
  • A filter used before a signal sampler to restrict the bandwidth of a signal.
2.Spatial anti-aliasing:
  • The technique of minimizing aliasing when representing a high resolution image at lower resolution.
3.Super sample anti-aliasing, multi sample anti-aliasing:
  • Both are the types of spatial anti-aliasing methods.
4.Fast approximated anti-aliasing:
  • An anti-aliasing created by Timothy Lottes under NVIDIA.
5.Coverage sampling anti-aliasing (CSAA):
  • A technology first used in GeForce 8 series.
6.Temporal anti-aliasing (TAA):
  • Technique to reduce or remove the effects of temporal aliasing.
Why anti-aliasing?
  • If the text or graphic is aliased in the low resolution output device then the user may not understand that and he may change to another website hence we use anti-aliasing technique.
